South Georgia Island is one of the most remote places on Earth. The island is British Territory, part of South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands. South Georgia is one main island, with several small ones, many islets and rocks in the Southern Ocean. South Georgia Island is located approximately 350 kilometers south of the Antarctic convergence.
About 860 miles southeast of the Falkland Islands, and around 1,500 miles from South America, South Georgia is around 100 miles long and up to around 25 miles wide. The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) has had a presence on South Georgia and currently operates research stations.
